The Claim Review

The US has given far more support to Ukraine than Europe

The claim asserts that the United States has provided significantly more support to Ukraine than European countries. This perspective is often based on the substantial military aid packages announced by the U.S. since the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Proponents of this view highlight the U.S.'s leading role in supplying advanced weaponry and financial assistance to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities. They argue that Europe's contributions, while significant, have been comparatively less in both scale and immediacy.

The evidence

Initial analyses indicated that the United States was the largest single contributor of aid to Ukraine. For instance, between February 2022 and May 2023, the U.S. pledged nearly €71 billion in total aid, while EU countries and institutions committed approximately €68 billion, suggesting near parity in support levels. However, more recent data reveals a significant shift in this dynamic. As of December 31, 2025, the U.S. Congress had made available $188 billion in spending related to the war in Ukraine, with about $127 billion directly supporting Ukraine. Notably, there was no new U.S. aid legislation since 2024, and combined European aid has surpassed U.S. contributions. (cfr.org)

In contrast, European nations have markedly increased their support. In 2025, European military aid rose by 67% above the 2022–2024 average, while non-military aid increased by 59%. This substantial increase in European support has largely offset the reduction in U.S. aid, maintaining the overall volume of assistance to Ukraine. (kielinstitut.de)

These developments suggest that while the U.S. played a leading role in the initial stages of support to Ukraine, European countries have since increased their commitments, now providing more substantial overall aid. Therefore, the claim that the U.S. has given far more support to Ukraine than Europe is no longer accurate based on the latest available data.
